Normal Group Training v Small Group Training: Which is Best?

Did you know that there is a huge difference between ‘normal’ Group Training and Small Group Training? Some people love the latter, while others prefer the former. Here at Nu Energy Body Therapy in Melbourne, we believe that Small Group Training gets the best results for our clients for so many reasons. In fact, we don’t do any larger Group Training at all – it’s just not our style. By the end of this article, you’ll understand why.

Let me outline the difference between Group Training and Small Group Training so that you can find out what to expect from each method of working out and make up your own mind about which one is right for you.

‘Traditional’ Group Training v Small Group Training

  1. Led by an Instructor v
Led by a Teacher or Coach
    .
  2. Mass environment with up to 40 people in a class v
Intimate class with only 6 participants max!
  3. Generic instructions and corrections given to the whole group v
Specific instructions and corrections offered to individuals based on their performance and needs.
  4. No detailed attention to individual performance v
Focused attention to participant performance while taking note of improvements or changes in ability over time.
  5. People can hide in class and get away with poor technique or ‘not trying’ v
Teacher can see everyone at all times and make adjustments for clients’ needs such as modifying movements (making them easier) or offering a variation (making them more challenging) as required.
  6. Not enough suitable props/weights etc to go around for everyone, therefore some people may have to use inappropriate ones v
Always have the necessary props for all participants in the class specific to their capability.
  7. Not all places have ‘floaters’ (qualified people on the floor) to help with technique and questions during workout v
Students can always ask questions during class and have their technique corrected. No need for floaters.
  8. Will not or cannot pause a class to work on something specific v
Have the ability to momentarily stop class to work on client’s difficulties, form, questions etc.
  9. Workout is a generic routine made for everyone v
Class exercises are organic and choreographed to the bodies in the class.
  10. Generic corrections to make things simpler v
Exercise are modified or varied according to individual’s specific needs.
  11. No personal feedback v
Personal feedback and suggestions on how to improve your workout are valued and often offered.
  12. Instructor cannot identify the challengers because there are too people many in class to see who is ready v
Teacher can identify which students are up to doing a ‘challenge’ to push them a little further!

Awesome Small Group Training in Melbourne

So, as you can see, there is a huge difference between these two types of training. You simply need to ask yourself which one sounds right for you to improve and challenge your regular exercise regime? Which one would make you feel more seen, more welcome, more encouraged, and more invested in?

My takeaway is, unless you want to hide away from challenges in class, Small Group Training is always absolutely preferred for your best experience outcome.
